A Big Mini Crisis

Lara Mumby-Croft. 2013. Mane. (Human hair, Hessian and cotton thread) . Collection of the artist.

Well, my calculations and measurements were correct!!! The extra pieces of felt I made in case of mishaps are just that, and will hopefully not be needed. However, the countless sewing machine test I did on several pieces of samples turned out to be misleading! I had several ways of sewing together the 3.4m x 1.7m rug (which I expect will reduce in size due to my method of sewing). I have now  learned my lesson that small test samples are not necessarily going to work in a large scale practice. One of the ways of sewing the rug together would have worked, but just ruined the aesthetic of the rug, and so I had to scrap the only way to make the rug with a sewing machine.  So... I am currently working on hand stitching the rug together. I am so thankful that I have been ahead of schedule, as it means now I am behind schedule it is not as dire as it could have been.  The photograph attached to this blog post is of Mane, the rug I am now spending all day hand sewing. It is only pinned in place in this photograph and at that point I was unaware of the fact I would have to hand stitch it. I am determined to have it finished before next Monday, so watch this space...
